Founded in 1857, it’s recognised by FIFA as the world’s oldest official football club. Football history began in Yorkshire!

The modern Olympic Games were inspired by the Much Wenlock Games, held in Shropshire in 1850. The London 2012 mascot “Wenlock” was named after them!

The game began in Scotland in the 1400s—but King James II banned it in 1457 because soldiers were playing golf instead of practising archery!

🎾 King Henry VIII Was Tennis-Mad
He had an indoor tennis court built at Hampton Court Palace in the 1530s! He played a version called “real tennis,” which still exists today.
🏛️ The Ancient Olympics Were Held to Honour the Gods
The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, as a religious festival to honour Zeus, king of the gods. Only free men from Greek city-states could compete—and they did so completely naked!
🐎 Chinese Emperors Played Polo Over 2,000 Years Ago
During the Tang Dynasty (7th–10th century), polo was played by Chinese emperors and nobles. The game was so popular it appeared in artwork and poetry—a true royal pastime.

The game of chaturanga, the early version of modern chess, was developed in 6th-century India. It was played in royal courts as a way to teach military tactics and strategy.

Polo began in ancient Persia over 2,500 years ago as a way for cavalry soldiers to train. It quickly became a royal sport for Persian kings and spread across Asia and the Middle East.

NBA star Jason Terry slept in the shorts of the opposing team the night before games. Baseball players wear “lucky socks” and repeat rituals before every match.

At Wimbledon, balls are kept in refrigerators before matches so they bounce just right!
🏈 American Footballs Aren’t Made of Pigskin
They’re called “pigskins,” but modern footballs are made from cowhide. Way back in history, some balls were made from real pig bladders. Ew!

Bolt’s top speed is over 27 mph, while scientists think the T-Rex could only run at about 12–15 mph. So if there’s a dinosaur race, back Bolt!
